“Sparrow Day 2024”

The chirping of sparrows filled the air at BLT III, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, as the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL) joined hands with numerous members, students, and passionate citizen scientists to commemorate World Sparrow Day 2024. The event, graced by esteemed personalities including Emeritus Professor Sarath Kotagama, Professor Nihal Dayawansa, Dr. Jagath Gunawardana, Mr Moditha Hiranya Kodikara Arachchi , Mr. Channa Ekanayake and YZA member Mrs Siluni Dayananda, witnessed an engaging session revolving around the beloved bird species.
World Sparrow Day, observed annually on March 20th, serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving sparrows and their natural habitats. This year’s celebration in Sri Lanka not only highlighted the significance of sparrows but also provided a platform for participants to share their observations and insights about these feathered friends.
World Sparrow Day 2024 in Sri Lanka was not merely a commemoration but a testament to the power of collaboration, education, and passion in nurturing a sustainable future for both birds and humans alike.
